Engine VS Motor

The first thing to note in relation to the argument Engine VS Motor obviously is the type of fuel... but there are more...

Key features summary:

  • Fuel
  • Size
  • Heat dispersion
  • Noise
  • Complexity & number of components
  • Vibrations

If you dare to tinker around engines and electric motors, even as newby, you'll notice how electric motors are so simple and made up of few components, while a combustion engine even something simple as the Fiat 500 2 cylinder is made of hundreds of components.

The efficiency is another property that is striking in terms of difference. (The ME1507 is rated as 92% efficiency)

The size, you can see on the left the Fiat 500 engine in 12:1 scale and the Motenergy motor always at 12:1 scale on the right in the photo.

The noise and the heat generated is also very different.

We could include also the weight, however some older electric motors are quite heavy. Any modern mid spec motor would be much lighter than any comparable engine.

Of course EVs do need an inverter/controller, relays and some cabling.  Batteries I would exclude as the weight of the fuel and tank can balance out part of that.
